A Cultura não se Proíbe - Promove-se. / Culture is not prohibited - It's encouraged.

I was recently hosted in Luanda in what is considered the best hotel in Angola - the HCTA (Talatona Convention Center Hotel), and therefore the most expensive: (a day costs about 800 USD - 618 €), while an employee hardly earns more than 450 USD (348 €) / month, ie: 11.6 € / Day ...

I was, in the last eight years, in many of Luanda's hotels (Trópico, Alvalade, Continental, etc.). In the provincies, I've lost count.

I've also lost count the times that, in Angola, for being a "compulsive photographer", I had issues with the autorities, or with the locals.
Like Albano Neves e Sousa wrote:

"ANGOLANO"

I accept it, actually, I don't, but I comprehend it.

Mas já deixei de aceitar o
"Castigo"...

But I stopped accepting the "punishment"...

I understand that in a country that lived decades in a "single party" system, where, for many years it was forbidden to photograph, the stigma still exists, even if it doesn't have any justification anymore. Angola has lived in peace for 9 years, Angola needs it's artist - it's musicians, painters, architects, sculptors, people from the theater and cinema, it's artesans and also it's photographers.

Gone are the days where photographing certain buildings or situations could be accepted as "a danger"

Today, like has been demonstrated by the 9/11 terrorist attacks in NY, terroism is methodically prepaired with sophisticated technological means and networks that move wisely in cybernautical space. To "do the evil" a celphone is, infinitally more usefull and discrete than my heavy Canon 50D with 28-200mm lens.

I don't like that people (here and there) tell me that "things are like they are..."
It doesn't have to be like that. I don't want them to be like that.

I understand that photographing, drawing, writing or using any form of artistic expression is a gesture of individual liberty. To permit and (especially) to encourage every form of artistic expression is a demonstration of democratic colture and respect for the individuality and liberty of the citizens.

A Cultura não se Proíbe - Promove-se.

Culture is not prohibited - It's encouraged.

Numa so

In a democratic society (or that claims that status) development and modernity are measured, and much, by it's cultural policy.

In Portugal I assist to a scary "return to the past". It won't take long to, like happened with Gérard Castello-Lopes in the 50's, you're arrested for photographing a beggar in Rossio...

I hoped, frankly, to assist in Angola to a cultural progress and a change of metalities that accompanied the frank economical and financial evolution of that African giant.

And I don't even mention anymore the area where I have the most knowledge - architecture

Limito-me, neste texto, à minha condição de fotógrafo amador.
Voltando ao HCTA;

I limit myself in this text to my condition of amateur photographer. Back to the HCTA;

On the first day of my stay, still in the hotel Lobby, I asked for permission to "take some pictures". There were more than enough reasons, from a giant fish sculpted in wood, to the enormous and unusual chandeliers hanging on the ceiling, passing by the architectural space itself.

Aware that I was in a private estate, with it's own rules, and although there was no signage saying "No Photography", I adressed a reception officer, that directed me to another one that finally told me what I wanted: Ok! No problem!.

Among the "big fish" and other minor reasons, I was, that night, approached by a friendly host, African, who asked me to take his picture, and then gave me his business card so I could send it to him.

As the days passed, the hotel staff got used to see me enter and exit with the "canon" hanging in my hand.
Followed the bar officials, beautiful by the way, who posed for the picture with a sweet look and frank smile.

Até um belo dia...

Until one day...

The only day I had no "program" and decided to stay in the hotel pool.
The pool's space had nothing interesting. Moreover, it was deserted.
However, being situated in the 1st of the 5 floors of the building, from there I had a different perspective of the it, and could also capture a less ordinary picture of the interior garden of the lower floor.

After a long dive I "attacked" those objectives.

It didn't take long for an administrative officer, superior to the ones I already knew, telling me a complaint was recieved for taking pictures (...).

I confess I was furious. I claimed my condition as a guest, my vocation as a photographer and even my angolan nationality.

De nada serviu. (...)_ São as Regras"(...);

To no avail. (...)_They're the ruoles.(...);

_ Regras de quem? perguntei indignado.
_Rules fro who? I asked wrathful.

_Dos donos. Respondeu prontamente.

_From the owners. She promptly answered.

_And who are those owners?! I asked again, even knowing the answer...

The tone of the conversation went up... I told he just what I thought. That we no longer lived on a "single party", which should at least have called me side (the tone of the conversation and my gestures attracted the few frequenters of the place), I told her inclusively that I've requested, and obtained (on arival), the "authorization" to photograph.

From the face she made I understood she didn't believe me. Spoke with someone on the radio and returned to charge:

_Tell me the name of the person that authorized you, please.

    Aí "passei-me... Evidentemente não lhe dei nome nenhum e ataquei "forte e feio";

 I lost it... Evidently I didn't gave her any name and attacked back;

_You are having a fascist way of thinking!

   "If you want get the Director or even the President but with you I won't speak anymore."

    She said something else over the radio, in a very low tone, and went away.

    I laid on the towel, asked for a "caipirinha" and thought...

"Para onde vais tu meu país?!..."
"Where is my country going?!..."

* macas: zangas

** pastinhas: angolanos na "casa dos 30" que circulam pela cidade com uma "pastinha" debaixo do braço e se sentem, frequentemente, autorizados a chatear quem eles muito bem entendem e quando muito bem entendem. Os menos conhecedores, estrangeiros sobretudo, acabam por ter que "pagar a portagem" para se verem livres desses energúmenos corruptos.

Note: I will be back to the "HCTA" soon, this time to talk about architecture, because I liked (with some exceptions, of course) that building and, by the way, to show some of the pictures I managed to take...
