Um dia a casa "vem abaixo"... / One day the house will "go down"

Um dia a casa "vem abaixo"...

One day the house will "go down"

When in 2006 I designed this "weekend" house for Mussulo, the "life" in the island was another (Note 1)

It wasn't an order from a client, in the formal sense of arcihtectural project orders.
It was a challange posed by an angolan "brother", family member and childhood friend.

The "site" sufficiently "explained" and illustrated in this post that I edited at the time was, for me, very familiar. I knew it and know it like I know few others. I refer to the site in a comprehensive sence. I know the island well, the place, but especially the people that lived there permanently.

Over several years I traveled the long Mussulo Island (mounted on a sand motorcycle), with my camera on my back and met the reality of that apparent paradise.

I met the coast, the counter-coast, but mainly what I call the "Middle Mussulo".

The coast is dominated by the holiday homes of the people with greater economical power.

The counter-coast, wilder, is a huge extension of fine sand, an endless beach, unique, where it's "required to whatch the sun-set.", Unforgetable.

In addition to the endless sands of Mussulo's wild site, there are a few fishing villages. People from Mussulo that lives from fishing in the deep seas, that dries the fish, (that then sells in Luanda) in huge wood structures.

The "Middle Mussulo" is some kind of "no man's land". For those who don't know it.

Although, there is where the life of the island resides. That's where people live, in extreme poverty conditions, "forgotten" and disregarded by most of the "weekend residents", including many "personalities".

Indifferent to the people that bury their children, victims of malaria, in front of their poor huts made out of debris the sea brings. A "heap" of sand with some flowers on top and that's all.

However it would be unfair not to mention the exceptions, which I also know. People that are so sensitive to the reality of that people, that help them, that educate them, that protect them, that give them jobs. Some live permanently in the island, like a primary teacher that I heard of.

Other share that they can with the natives, allowing them to vaccinate their children, who acquire conditions that otherwise would never have. It is fine to make this distinction.

On the other hand, the Mussulo has its own culture and a specific imaginary. It has its "Sobas", its traditions, its legends.

The most significative of all is the devotion to Kianda - Some kind of "Mermaid-Queen" that protects fisherman and that is "owner" of many sacred paths in the island.

To Kianda is made, every year, a tribal ritual (Note 2). The "Sobas" get toguether, along with women with drums, the people with the protective offerings to the queen (animals, beverages, goods of all types that are thrown overboard in a gesture of thanks and worship for her.)

This was the Mussulo I "lived" in 2006 wen I designed this weekend home.

In brief, because the aforementioned post summarizes the assumptions of the project, the basic idea was to integrate an unapologetically contemporary construction, (denying pre-made "fashion" models in wood) in the landscape of the island, making it progressively "hidden" to the extent that the vegetation would grow. That's what happened.

A casa tornou-se "invisível" da costa.

The house became "invisible" from the coast.

Were also key figures of the project: the Angolan "natural" way of life and the need to create a "microclimate" of freshness - hence the indoor pool which infects all areas of the house.

But everything changes and the island did too. Especially the habits of the people that there found "peace" at the end of the week.

The hectic life in the big city, the daily chaos in traffic and the wear rate of the accumulated days of hard work gradually moved these people away from the (Saturday and Sunday) society in Mussulo.

I know that reality well. I know well what is having to wake up at five AM, for example, in South Luanda, to cover about 17 kilometers to the city in more than two hours...

On the other hand, the comfort and security that the private condominiums offer, end up being a better alternative than peaceful and reinvigorating the "Journey to Mussulo."

A trip necessarily made by boat, from private marinas or the "Carimba" docking, (in dangerous floating taxis) or even (also in those "taxis"), from the beach in front of the old "Museum of Slavery".

Either way, this trip always requires stressful logistics.

That's why, increasingly, the old weekend at the islans enthusiasts choose to stay at home.

That is the main reason this work of mine was born with some force, in 2007, and then stopped after it was "standing".

And, one day, it may even "go down"...

It wouldn't be the first. Some owners eventually give up their buildings, in part because they serve little use, but also because of the high mantainance costs and the taxes that are required.

Although the will of the "architect" is always to see his "son grow", I still like seing this "embalmed body", in the expectation the cycle changes, and the habits change as well.

In this sense, and even because the house proposed a "contamination" to the house on the side, (a premade model in wood, imported from Brasil), also from the family, that was (and still is) part of a comprehensive recreational program (the common ground is big, what makes it possible to create common spaces - pool, tennis court, etc) that I proposed, recently, that the "comercial" vertent of the space was explored, integrated in the aleady existent turistic offer the island offers.

Maybe that is the only way my house doesn't "go down"...

E, se for, foi...
Valeu a pena tentar.

And, if it does, it did....
It was worth trying.

Note 1: Mussulo is not an island. It is, actually, a peninsula. The car "travessy" is possible (only in a jeep), depending on the time of the year and the tides. And it's success depends, in large measure, on the experience of the "adventurers".

Nota 2: (...)
A festa, no primeiro dia, começa à meia noite.

Note 2: (...) The Party of the island or Kianda is a ceremony of offerings to the sea (Kianda). It aims to seek protection from natural disasters before islander families (tides) and endemic diseases and ask to have production and productivity in the fishing island.
The party, on the first day begins at midnight. From this time until the morning, are part of it exclusively, the Great "Soba", the elders, the shaman and the elders's guests.
This uniqueness translates into the realization, on that time, the rituals of secrecy, ie, exorcism and occult rituals.

(...) The celebration is an exorcism to appease the desires of the Kianda, capricious and insatiable, that if awarded, sleeps for long. Dancing, singing, eating and throwing into the sea the best wine and the best meats. They sacrifice animals to vanish in blood on the sand. They offer fruits and flowers to soothe Kianda's thirst and appetite so that she sleeps, sated and drunk, thus avoiding the Kalema, the giant wave that sweeps the coast and that is the bane of fishermen.
